Images and Moral Meanings in Constantine Beschi's Tēmpāvaṇi Chapters 18-19 462Francis X. Clooney, S.J.16 The Incipient Devotion to the Martyrs of Japan: The 'True Images' of the Calvary of Nagasaki 485 Raphaèle Preisinger Index Nominum 521It is human nature that things spark curiosity in the lost exchanges from which they arose, and none were more contentious than those produced by the jostling of faith traditions when people crossed seas and came into contact with distant cultures for the first time. The goal of this volume has been to understand the place and the significance of material remnants of religious encounter in Asia from the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuriesamong protagonists representing various branches and orders of Buddhism, Confucianism, Dutch Reformed Protestantism, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Roman Catholicism, and Taoism in conversation and conflict-when objects local and global, messy and shiny, concrete and imaginary, familiar and strange began to wash up on the shores of the world stage. Our first debt of thanks must go to the instigator of this unlikely journey, the founding General Editor of the Intersections series, Karl Enenkel, for his infectious enthusiasm for the project, from his initial invitation to his gentle shepherding of the manuscript through completion. This book would never have seen the light of day without the thoughtful support of Karl and the Intersections Editorial Board, in particular Walter Melion, who from the outset believed in the originality and value of a book dedicated to the siren calls of irrepressible objects. We also remain extremely grateful to the anonymous peer reviewers of this text for their encouragement, nuanced reading, and timely aid as deadlines neared.Edited volumes can be difficult to write, especially when disciplinary boundaries and intellectual practices sit uneasily side by side. The contributors to this collection should be commended for sharing the results of their forays into the unknown.Their courageous ingenuity, panoramic perspective, and generosity of spirit is evidenced on every page, and it is these endeavours which must be credited for the keen engagement of the reviewers with a volume that brought together so many disparate regions and objects, yesterday's actors and today's scholars. The physical reality of this material object, this book, would not have been possible without the exceptional labour of Jonathan Hoare, copyeditor extraordinaire bar none, whose sharp eye for every infelicity was only matched by his bottomless patience for the unusually intricate editing and indexing imposed by the inclusion of twenty languages (twelve non-Western, eight Western) in this manuscript.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
