Abstract Kos.mo.to.ga'les. N.L. fem. n. Kosmotoga , type genus of the order; L. fem. pl. n. suff. ‐ales , ending to denote an order; N.L. fem. pl. n. Kosmotogales , the order whose nomenclatural type is the genus Kosmotoga. The order Kosmotogales comprises mesophilic and thermophilic bacteria that are anaerobic heterotrophs. The cells are Gram‐stain‐negative, sheathed, short rods, or ovoid cocci. They produce hydrogen or hydrogen sulfide. Optimal growth occurs between 37 and 70°C. Some members of the order reduce thiosulfate and/or sulfur to sulfide. Known habitats are hydrothermal vents, marine sediments, crustal fluids, deep aquifers, oil reservoirs, hydrocarbon‐impacted sites, and anaerobic man‐made environments. The Kosmotogales order currently includes one family, the Kosmotogaceae , and thus the description is the same as that of the Kosmotogaceae family. DNA G + C content (mol%) : 36.4–42.5. Type genus : Kosmotoga DiPippo et al. 2009 VP (synonym: Thermococcoides Feng et al. 2010), emend. Nunoura et al. 2010.
