Este artículo inicia un estudio de las funciones del Salón de Reinos como espacio teatral en el Palacio del Buen Retiro, desde su construcción en Madrid hacia 1633. Se comienza por recordar que el Salón grande del Palacio del Buen Retiro ya fue concebido con la intención de acoger en su espacio fiestas palaciegas presididas por los reyes y, entre ellas, representaciones teatrales. Se hacen unas precisiones terminológicas en torno a las diferentes denominaciones del Salón, teniendo en cuenta su posible relación con otros nombres como «saloncete» y «saloncillo», muy usados en la documentación del siglo xvii. Tras unas observaciones sobre su uso teatral entre 1650 y 1700, en la parte final se pone el foco sobre el espacio del Salón desde la perspectiva del traslado de tablados y tramoyas en el ámbito cortesano del siglo xvii, tanto en el Alcázar de Madrid como en el Palacio del Buen Retiro.
