Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

In chapter 2, Brant Venables analyzes monuments at military heritage sites, focusing on the Saratoga monuments to Polish engineer Thaddeus Kościuszko and Irish American Timothy Murphy and the Joseph Brant Mohawk Indian monument in Brantford, Ontario. Venables demonstrates how ethnic groups in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were aware of the importance of challenging the authorized heritage discourse. These three groups raised money to create their own monuments when their role in history was being silenced. Venables examines how ethnic groups have engaged with nationalistic heritage narratives by emphasizing their own sacrifice, martial valor, and patriotism. He argues that each of these sites resists ethnic prejudice and works to integrate the ethnic groups into the mainstream American Revolutionary War heritage narrative or, in the case of the Joseph Brant monument, challenge the American portrayal of the Revolutionary War.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
