Ce texte présente quelques éléments pour comprendre le développement l’enseignement des arts aux Etats-Unis et en parallèle au Québec. Ses références sont des ouvrages sur l’histoire de l’enseignement des arts et sur l’histoire de l’enseignement, ainsi que des articles parus dans des revues spécialisées et des mémoires universitaires. Le modèle d’enseignement des arts issu des académies européennes ne sera pas présenté car rejeté en Amérique du Nord dès la fin du 19 e siècle, dans le cadre d’un mouvement de revendication d’une identité nationale. Quant au modèle progressif, spécifique à l’Amérique du Nord, il fera l’objet d’une plus longue présentation. Dans un deuxième temps, l’article se centre sur les transformations du le domaine à partir des années 1950 aux Etats-Unis et dans les années 2000 au Québec. Enfin, la conclusion de cet exposé porte sur des constats observés de nos jours, qui traduisent l’héritage de cette histoire particulière, et sur des propositions pour (re)penser cet enseignement
