Association of sleep disruption with treatment response using intermittent theta-burst stimulation for treatment-resistant depression

Abstract
Purpose: Sleep disruption is associated with major depressive disorder.However, it is unclear whether patients' sleep quality before intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) treatment is associated with response.Methods: Data from 203 patients from a published clinical trial using two forms of iTBS were analyzed.Multivariable linear regression was used to estimate the association between baseline sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)) and depression severity (Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD-17)) after 6 weeks of treatment.Secondary analyses examined the association between PSQI domains and depression severity.Result: Baseline PSQI score (β=0.35,95 %CI:0.09-0.61)was associated with end-of-treatment HRSD-17 score.The only PSQI domain associated with treatment outcome was need for sleep medication (β = -4.91,95 %CI:-8.69--1.13).Conclusion: Sleep disruption before iTBS treatment is associated with worse outcomes.Further research is required to determine if addressing sleep disruption before iTBS can improve outcomes.ClinicalTrials.
