Abstract
Abstract Economic integration of North American markets has evolved unevenly and been marked by political divisions within and between Canada, Mexico, and the United States. This chapter considers whether the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA) has the potential to increase integration of the North American economy. In so doing, it explores amendments to trade provisions (market access and rules of origin) in key industry sectors (agriculture and automotive manufacturing). It also considers the impact that the USMCA’s environmental, labour, and foreign investment chapters might have on integration of the North American economy. It is early to make any certain conclusions about the full impact of the USMCA on North American integration. However, this chapter ultimately concludes that the USMCA has the potential to both facilitate and impede economic integration in North America.
