Abstract
This chapter explores how John Wilson and J.G. Lockhart deployed the kirkyard archetype in their Scottish rural fiction during the 1820s. Located at the heart of the traditional village, Wilson and Lockhart’s kirkyard operates to articulate a vision of Scottish identity that responds to modernity through its focus on local space and its invocation of local, historical, and emotional ties. The chapter then examines two examples of the impact of this archetype: Caroline Southey Bowles’ Chapters on Churchyards sketches and the kailyard fictions of J.M. Barrie and Ian Maclaren.
