Un discours répandu affirme que les difficultés d’abstraction constituent un obstacle majeur à l’apprentissage des mathématiques. Malgré le fait que les institutions porteuses de ces discours omettent de questionner la signification même de l’expression « difficultés d’abstraction », elles vont tout de même effectuer des propositions d’interventions; l’impact de celles-ci sur la nature des savoirs enseignés semble ne pas être interrogé. Cet article, de nature théorique, tente de préciser les différentes significations accordées à l’abstraction, en particulier pour l’apprentissage des mathématiques selon différentes disciplines contributives des sciences de l’éducation afin de se doter de critères pour analyser les discours portant sur les difficultés d’abstraction en mathématiques en éducation.
