Abstract
Cet article cherche à préciser certaines idées centrales d’Alan Sillitoe dans ses premiers textes sur Nottingham, en prenant une certaine distance avec les concepts de rébellion ou de rage qui lui sont habituellement associés. On montre ainsi que la thématique la plus développée par le romancier est au contraire celle de l’accommodement à un système social devenu plus généreux pour le prolétariat britannique dans les années 1950. Une autre idée centrale est l’acceptation des phases du cycle de vie, notamment l’entrée dans l’âge adulte par le travail et le mariage. On montre également que Sillitoe a conservé ces orientations dans les scénarios rédigés pour les adaptations filmiques de ses textes alors qu’il a accepté de modifier le profil psychologique de ses personnages.
