Abstract
Cet article a pour objectif de discuter le rôle de l’utilisation des lettres dans la formation de la pensée algébrique chez les élèves du primaire. La question de l’utilisation de lettres lors de l’apprentissage des mathématiques au primaire est controversée dans la littérature. Depuis les années 80, deux visions s’opposent : 1) le développement de la pensée algébrique doit être amorcé dès le primaire sans l’utilisation explicite du symbolisme littérale ; 2) le symbolisme est un outil indispensable du développement de la pensée mathématique et doit être utilisé dès le début de l’apprentissage. Notre réflexion vise à soulever des questions sur l’usage de la lettre à la fois comme outil mathématique et comme outil d’apprentissage.
