Abstract
Commentant l’un des principaux arguments de l’anthropologue Michel-Rolph Trouillot (Silencing the Past. Power and the Production of History, 1995), l’historienne Ada Ferrer affirme, en 2012, que si la révolution haïtienne a été accueillie par le silence, « ce fut un silence retentissant ». On peut utiliser ce même adjectif – retentissant – pour parler du prétendu silence des femmes haïtiennes et des écrivaines haïtiennes en particulier. Si de nombreux textes critiques s’articulent autour de ce concept, d’autres appellent à une remise en question de sa pertinence. Cet article analyse la façon dont des écrivaines haïtiennes utilisent le silence pour signifier la force et la puissance de leurs personnages. Ma lecture de la nouvelle « Un drame » de Virginie Sampeur (1839-1919) montre que le silence n’est pas nécessairement synonyme d’impuissance ou de vulnérabilité. Ma lecture de « Crime et châtiment » de la nouvelliste contemporaine Chantal Kénol suggère que le silence n’est pas toujours passif, mais peut constituer une forme de résistance active. Le silence peut être puissant.
