Figure héroïque de la période révolutionnaire haïtienne, Sanite Bélair est, en 1942, le personnage éponyme de deux oeuvres théâtrales rédigées l’une par Jeanne Perez et l’autre par Olivia Rosemont-Manigat. La pièce de Perez, L’héroïsme de Sanite Bélair, publiée quelque temps plus tard, nous est parvenue. Quelle voix la dramaturge a-t-elle forgée pour cette héroïne dont on sait peu de choses ? Jeanne Perez est la première rédactrice en chef de La Voix des Femmes, l’organe de presse de la Ligue Féminine d’Action Sociale dont elle est membre. Son traitement du personnage de Bélair semble s’inscrire dans le prolongement de son activité de militante féministe, de son travail de journaliste et d’avocate engagée dans la construction d’une société égalitaire et juste. Pour déconstruire l’idée reçue de l’« éternelle mineure » du discours politique dominant qui sert à exclure la femme de la gestion politique du pays, Perez dresse un portrait tout en nuances d’une Sanite Bélair lucide, stratège et visionnaire.
