Cet article analyse l’expérience des élèves en apprentissage de la langue de scolarisation à l’égard des services éducatifs complémentaires. Nous avons réalisé des entretiens individuels semi-dirigés avec du personnel professionnel des services éducatifs complémentaires (n = 3; une orthophoniste, une psychologue et une psychoéducatrice) et des élèves du secondaire ayant effectué un séjour en classe d’accueil (n = 7) dans la région métropolitaine de Montréal. Notre analyse thématique s’appuie sur les concepts d’altérisation, de pensée déficitaire et de techniques de contrôle. Selon nos données, les élèves ne reçoivent pas toujours les services dont ils auraient besoin, mais les services éducatifs complémentaires offerts auraient un effet positif sur leur expérience. Le personnel professionnel mentionne des enjeux documentés ailleurs pour tous les élèves, dont un manque de compréhension des différences entre les services et un manque d’acceptation de leurs recommandations découlant d’évaluations des élèves, ainsi qu’un accès limité à ces services pour les élèves en apprentissage du français. Selon notre analyse, les élèves sont tenus de s’adapter aux règles de l’école pour s’intégrer et réussir, et des services sont offerts pour les « soutenir » dans cette adaptation, notamment parce qu’ils font partie d’une « diversité à prendre en compte ».
