Abstract
En 2024, on soulignera le quinzième anniversaire de la création du concept de « limites planétaires ». L’objectif premier de ces « limites » est d’identifier les conditions minimales requises pour garantir un espace opérationnel et existentiel sûr pour l’humanité à l’intérieur des limites biophysiques planétaires. En dépit des qualités scientifiques et heuristiques évidentes du concept de « limites planétaires », celui-ci n’inclut pas explicitement les déchets dans les calculs de ces limites. Pourtant, l’invisibilité des déchets – de leur production à leur dispersion – dans le projet scientifique des « limites planétaires » ne constitue pas pour autant une anomalie. Elle reflète le silence relatif des débats socio-juridiques et scientifiques contemporains sur le sujet. Quelle est la relation entre les déchets, la production de gaz à effet de serre et les changements climatiques ? Pourquoi les déchets sont-ils largement ignorés dans les débats relatifs aux limites planétaires ? Comment cette ignorance est-elle générée ? La présente contribution s’attardera à répondre à ces questions et à démontrer que le dépassement des limites planétaires peut être en partie attribué aux déchets qui empiètent dorénavant de manière irréversible sur les limites du système Terre.
