Lancées il y a maintenant plus de quinze ans au sein du Stockholm Resilience Centre, les recherches sur les « limites planétaires » offrent de précieux points d’appui dans la lutte à mener contre la catastrophe écologique actuelle. Elles permettent notamment de mieux prendre la mesure de l’ampleur de cette catastrophe et des dangers qu’elle représente. Cependant, ces travaux véhiculent aussi une approche de la question écologique qui n’est pas forcément très mobilisatrice, en partie à cause de son caractère très abstrait et implicitement autoritaire; du fait également qu’elle ne suggère aucune raison positive de limiter la destruction en cours de notre planète, sinon la simple survie de l’humanité. Sans renier les apports de ces recherches, on peut faire valoir une tout autre approche de l’écologie, qui envisage le respect de la nature aussi comme l’occasion de bâtir des sociétés plus justes et plus démocratiques que celles que nous connaissons, ainsi que le suggère le mouvement de la décroissance.
