Les activités humaines interfèrent avec les processus biophysiques qui assurent le fonctionnement de la planète, notamment le climat, l’intégrité des territoires et de la biodiversité, ou le cycle de l’eau. Ces modifications pourraient entraîner si elles se poursuivent des changements d’envergure planétaire faisant quitter le système Terre des conditions stables des 10 000 dernières années qui ont permis l’essor des civilisations. Afin de prévenir de telles transformations, des scientifiques ont identifié neuf processus terrestres à risque, les ont représentés par des indicateurs spécifiques et les ont associés à des valeurs à ne pas franchir appelées limites planétaires. Celles-ci visent à guider les sociétés humaines afin d’éviter des changements environnementaux dangereux et définissent un « espace opérationnel sécuritaire pour l’humanité ». Cet article contextualise et décrit le concept de limite planétaire. Il détaille les processus affectés par les sociétés humaines, leurs limites planétaires, ainsi que les enjeux, failles et critiques entourant le concept.
