Abstract
Depuis la révolution industrielle du XVIIIe siècle, l’activité humaine a tellement modifié la Terre que certains scientifiques affirment que nous sommes entrés dans une nouvelle époque géologique : l’Anthropocène, qui décrit « l’ère des humains ». Bien que ce terme soit de plus en plus fréquent dans les médias et la littérature scientifique, il ne fait pas partie du calendrier géologique officiel. En effet, selon celui-ci, nous nous trouvons actuellement dans l’époque de l’Holocène. Des débats scientifiques vigoureux ont récemment eu lieu afin de déterminer si les effets des activités humaines ont une empreinte suffisamment importante et irréversible dans les ‘archives géologiques mondiales’ pour déclarer une nouvelle époque géologique - nommée Anthropocène - et si tel était le cas, identifier à quel moment cette nouvelle époque aurait officiellement débuté. Cet article propose une synthèse de la littérature récente sur cet important concept, en exposant la chronologie des faits saillants de la recherche et en expliquant les éléments encore débattus au sein de la communauté scientifique.
