Abstract
A piston equation was previously presented to describe the rigid-die compaction of powders. The main characteristic of the equation is to consider particle rearrangement and particle plastic deformation as two simultaneous mechanisms of powder densification that are active from the beginning of loading with ignoring the elastic deformation. This work is in fact a complementary paper to the previous ones. In this work, a summary of the theoretical basis of piston equation is firstly presented. Then, a numerical approach will be explained to calculate the variation of relative density due to the particle rearrangement and particle deformation mechanisms. It is reasoned that the increase in relative density due to the plastic deformation could be a criterion to compare the compactability of powders of the same kind. This is why some die compaction experiments were designed and applied on two pure iron powders and then analyzed by using the piston equation concept.
