Analytical model for Archimedes screw generators with rotating trough

Abstract
With growing energy needs, new technologies for energy generation have become an important focus. In the hydraulic and hydropower field, Archimedes screw generators (ASGs) have shown a good potential for sites with low flow rates (below 6 m3 s−1) and low heads (below 5 m). Usually, an ASG is built as a screw rotating within a fixed trough. In some cases, the trough is directly affixed to the screw and rotates with it, corresponding to the so called RASG (rotating-trough Archimedes screw generator). In this study, a RASG was investigated, and an analytical model was proposed to design these screws. The model includes different types of power losses related to friction, inlet and outlet flow and overfilling. Additionnally, experimental tests were conducted with a laboratory-scale screw. Experimental results allowed for validating the model with a relative error below 9%. Moreover, the RASG performed similarly to ‘traditional’ ASGs with efficiencies up to 90%.
