Abstract
The African-American historian Daniel Broyld examines the role of women in the emancipation of North America, noting their major contributions to abolitionist movements in the United States and Canada. He particularly highlights the role of Harriet Tubman, Mary Ellen Pleasant, Mary Bibb, and Caroline Elizabeth Loguen, who were all involved in freeing the enslaved (through the Underground Railroad), protecting runaway slaves, protesting, newspaper publishing, and writing. Broyld seeks to debunk the myth of the “Great Man in History” and to move women activists from the periphery to the centre of abolitionist struggles.
