Abstract
With this background to five centuries of European enslavement and colonialism, the seventh and final section of the book then examines the global struggle for reparations that emerged directly from these two crimes against humanity. Starting in the Caribbean, the Barbadian historian and chair of the Caribbean Community’s Reparations Commission, Hilary Beckles, describes the activities of the region’s governments and civil society since 2013 to coordinate their efforts with similar groups in the United States, Colombia, Canada, Europe, and Africa in order to achieve reparations for European slavery and colonialism in the Caribbean and the Americas. Beckles outlines the Caricom ten-point reparations plan with its demands for a sincere apology and admission that slavery had been a “crime against humanity”. He notes the progress of reparations in forcing Western governments, universities, companies, churches, monarchies, and British families like the Draxes and the Trevelyans to apologise to Caribbean citizens and make amends for their historical links to slavery in the region. He argues that despite some progress, success remains limited.
