Abstract
A case of extreme parental care in a sea star was documented using two distinct events during which brooding females of Henricia sanguinolenta prevented a predator (Leptasterias polaris) from eating most of their under-body brood for several days. Clear signs of detrimental effects on the brooding mother included mucous secretion and superficial epidermal damage on the aboral surface of the body. This is to our knowledge one of the rare records of an echinoderm parent placing their physical integrity directly at risk to protect/defend their brood against active predation.
