Abstract
Abstract: Wild turkeys ( Meleagris gallopavo ) are currently hunted in 49 states and 4 Canadian provinces. The birds are hunted in the spring and the fall, and season dates and methods of take vary among the states. This paper describes current regulations employed by the states and Canada to regulate the harvest of wild turkeys. We surveyed state and provincial wildlife agency biologists responsible for the wild turkey program in their states in 1999 to determine the status of hunting seasons throughout the United States and Canada. We report hunting seasons, hunting hours, legal methods of harvest, shot sizes, bag limits, and hunter and harvest numbers. We also discuss trends in harvest and hunter participation between 1985 and 1999. All 49 states and 4 Canadian provinces with populations of wild turkeys allowed spring hunting in 1999 while only 40 states and 1 province allowed fall hunting. Shotguns are allowed in all states; rifles are allowed in 4 states in the spring and fall, and 9 states in the fall. Hunter numbers increased 16% in the last five years to more than 2.66 million participants. Harvest numbers increased 13% in the last five years to 739,672 wild turkeys.
