Does Unusual Stomach-Lying Behaviour in FVB Laboratory Mice Reflect Pain and/or Poor Physical Health?

Abstract
In a university research facility, laboratory mice from the FVB strain were observed displaying an unusual form of inactivity, characterized by lying completely flat on the stomach, limbs sprawled out to the side or directly in front or behind. Since this strain is prone to diverse health concerns, and we had observed urinary calculi in this cohort, we had concerns that this behaviour could represent an unusual form of belly-pressing caused by abdominal pain. Such behavioural markers of poor physical health and welfare would be valuable because they can represent humane endpoints for research, help trigger interventions and improve colony management. To determine if relationships exist between this behaviour and health issues, intensive behavioural scans of 29 mice were therefore conducted for a week, and post mortem examinations then performed. No major health concerns were discovered that could explain this unusual behaviour. Potential future avenues of research include performing histology on tissues, and studying how weight and body temperature could play a role in the expression of this behaviour.
