Abstract

This study examines the impact of visual stories co-created with forcibly displaced children to express their agentic possibilities within the school context, particularly in mathematics classrooms.Using participatory co-design processes, six arts-based workshops were designed and facilitated for families to collaboratively illustrate stories of agency, identity, and belonging.Findings, in the form of co-designed visual stories, demonstrate students' use of visual representations to reclaim agency after experiencing forced displacement.The visual stories also highlight educators' roles in facilitating in-school mathematics learning experiences.This research underscores the potential of arts-based co-creation as a tool for children experiencing intersectional oppression to voice their lived experiences.
