Abstract
ABSTRACT This article challenges the prevailing depiction of Progressive Era Pentecost Bands as solely an extension of the Free Methodist Church, advocating for a more nuanced view. It explores their complex organizational dynamics, unique practices, and strong ties to working-class urban culture, particularly in the Midwest. The bands offered young adults, particularly individuals from working-class backgrounds, an opportunity to evangelize without formal ministerial training. Scholars of the social gospel, women’s history, and Holiness/Methodist traditions should consider the bands’ multifaceted nature and their significance within religious and societal contexts, especially their role in empowering marginalized groups.
