Abstract
This paper studies the efforts and approach of a renowned Islamic scholar of the subcontinent Mawlānā Ashraf ʻAlī Thānvī (1863– 1943) regarding social reformation. It finds that Thānvī has considered the reformation of the society as one of the major goals of worship. To him societal issues are more important than supererogatory acts of worship. He vigorously battled against societal evil and innovations in religion. He also laid a great stress on prescribing proper remedies for spiritual ailments of the people. If his writings, style of expression, thought and teachings are made a part of the curriculum in the light of modern requirements and facts, a moral and pious society can be formed which can get rid of the present degeneration and inaction.
