Abstract
Abstract: This article traces the evolution of the teaching of classics by European colonizers in Sri Lanka. It explores how and why the classical languages became popular among the Sri Lankan elite and the Europeans and Eurasians residing in Sri Lanka prior to the arrival of the British. Abstract: Cet article retrace l'évolution de l'enseignement des études classiques par les colonisateurs européens au Sri Lanka. Il explore comment et pourquoi les langues anciennes acquirent une certaine popularité au sein de l'élite sri-lankaise ainsi que parmi les Européens et les Eurasiens qui habitaient au Sri Lanka avant l'arrivée des Britanniques.
