Abstract
La santé et le bien-être maternels constituent un important enjeu de santé publique, et la santé mentale y tient un rôle clé. Selon les données recueillies, la plupart des nouvelles mères et des femmes enceintes se disent en bonne santé mentale et très satisfaites de leur vie, mais les cas de dépression post-partum (DPP) et d’anxiété sont courants au Canada. La recherche démontre que la DPP et une santé mentale déficiente nuisent au bien-être des mères et, en l’absence de traitement, peuvent compromettre le développement du nourrisson (ex. : engendrer un faible poids à la naissance, une naissance prématurée, un risque accru de problèmes de santé mentale plus tard dans la vie de l’enfant), en plus d’accabler le partenaire et les autres membres de la famille (y compris les pères, qui courent un risque accru de dépression ou d’anxiété).
