Abstract
Malgré un imposant corpus consacré à l’émigration des Canadiens français vers les États-Unis (1840–1930), on connait mal le nombre d’Américains qui en sont les descendants, en raison d’imprécisions dans les recensements. La présente étude vise à les quantifier par une approche patronymique. Divers fichiers furent croisés, suivis d’une vérification manuelle des noms de famille et de l’exploitation de microdonnées. Environ 5,7 millions d’Américains portent un patronyme canadien-français et, compte tenu d’un taux d’exogamie de 75,6 %, 10,0 millions possèdent une telle ascendance. Cet exode eut un impact considérable non seulement sur la démographie du Canada français mais aussi sur la distribution des noms de famille au Québec. En outre, environ 2,5 millions d’Américains ont un ancêtre venu directement de France, sans passer par le Canada.
