Taxonomic revision of <i>Corallina hombronii</i> : Type sequencing of <i>Jania hombronii</i> reveals its synonymy with <i>Corallina chamberlainiae</i> (Corallinales, Rhodophyta)

Abstract

The identity of the geniculate coralline red alga, Corallina hombronii, collected from the subantarctic Auckland Islands in 1840, has remained unclear and the name is rarely used. To clarify its identity, we sequenced portions of the psbA and rbcL genes from the type specimen. Phylogenetic analyses of psbA gene sequences resolved a clade that included type material of both C. hombronii and C. chamberlainiae (type locality: Gough Island, Tristan da Cunha), along with specimens from New Zealand mainland locations (including the Chatham Islands), Chile and the Falkland Islands. This clade was also resolved in phylogenies inferred from rbcL sequences that included material from these Southern Hemisphere locations. Thus, we synonymize C. hombronii and C. chamberlainiae, with the former, earlier published, name having taxonomic priority. This taxonomic assessment with contemporary collections confirms that C. hombronii is restricted to the Southern Hemisphere below latitudes of 30 degrees south in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
