Prometheanism in Ski/Snowboard Media: Messages About the Environment in Warren Miller “Docu-tainment” Films

Abstract
This study analyzes environmental discourses in Warren Miller Entertainment ski films. We consider if and how these discourses have pedagogical potential with respect to pro-environment communication and how opportunities to offer pro-environment messages might have been missed. Findings suggest that prominent environmental discourses in these films reflect Promethean views of nature as something that can be (and should be) dominated by humans to support personal consumption and pleasure/experience-seeking, including through epic engagements with pristine landscapes “on the skiing frontier”. Myths associated Western exceptionalism, inseparable from settler colonial narratives, were also prominent. Notably, there was an almost complete absence of awareness-raising and pedagogical messages related to the climate crisis and other environmental issues. We conclude the paper by highlighting the need for additional research concerned with environment-related sports media.
