Abstract
Abstract From 2022 to 2023, three African film festivals in Canada and Brazil engaged in an exploratory transnational programming intervention that examined the impact of a pre-selected film screened at all three festivals. These festivals, held at different times of the year, frame their activities around cultural convergence, connecting filmmakers and audiences, and exploring African living cultural traditions. This chapter examines the outcome of screening Maïmouna Jallow’s Tales of the Accidental City at the three festivals as part of a programming cycle and intervention. The chapter demonstrates how the film reached a transnational, multicultural level that underscores the divergence in reception due to cultural context, creating a place for discussion between the local public at the festival and in the African diaspora. The chapter examines how the tripartite engagement was crucial to the filmmaker’s journeys across continents, highlighting beneficial cultural exchanges afforded by such a programming intervention.
