Abstract
La « reconnaissance » est devenue un enjeu incontournable de la théorie sociale contemporaine, faisant écho aux divers mouvements « identitaires » (indépendantistes, nationalistes, LGBTQI, Black Lives Matter) ayant secoué la seconde moitié du xxe siècle et ayant continué à gagner en visibilité depuis. L’enjeu principal, le plus souvent, est celui de la justice, de l’égalité et de la coexistence dans des nations de plus en plus plurielles. Toutefois, la question demeure : pourquoi donc l’appartenance importe-t-elle autant ? En nous appuyant sur les écrits de Charles Taylor, nous essaierons d’apporter une réponse à cette question située au cœur des enjeux relatifs à la diversité culturelle. Le philosophe canadien, situé au carrefour de la phénoménologie et de l’herméneutique, formule en effet une ontologie sociale donnant lieu à une conception « dialogique » de l’identité, laquelle cherche à révéler les relations essentielles qui unissent l’individualité à son environnement, et en premier lieu à sa communauté culturelle. En voulant « resituer » le sujet, Taylor nous propose une théorie cherchant à concilier l’ancrage nécessaire dans une histoire et une collectivité avec l’aspiration purement moderne de liberté et d’autonomie individuelle.
