Abstract
Abstract This chapter analyzes contemporary Romani asylum-seeking from Hungary to Canada through the lens of the child-centered approach, which is combined here with a political economy perspective that underscores the capitalist relations of migration processes. While existing research using child-centered approaches has explored various aspects of children’s experiences with migration, this chapter fills a lacuna in the scholarship by focusing on migrant children’s experiences with labor and their perspectives on the broader economic context of migration. The research examines Romani migrant children’s experiences with and attitudes toward work and school, specifically the social relations that teenage refugees navigate with schooling in Canada and the connections they form to the world of work through their educational experiences. The chapter is based on ethnographic field research with asylum-seeking Hungarian Romani teenagers in Toronto.
