Abstract
Abstract Articulating a sustainable philosophy of music education is central to the educational integrity of any school system and hinges on the philosophy’s relevance and contributions it makes to those it serves. In this chapter, Elizabeth Gould deploys M. Francyne Huckaby’s promiscuous Black feminism in the context of Patricia Hill Collins’s Black feminist theory to analyze the erasure of race in the history of the founding of music education in antebellum Boston public schools. Juxtaposing Maxine Greene’s concept of freedom moving beyond human relations that currently exist as a means to conceive the world differently, with Angela Y. Davis’s concept of freedom as a battle for liberation in which the practice and theory of freedom cohere, the author argues that an ethical, necessarily feminist philosophy of music education may be expressed in the philosophical figuration, music education in/as activism.
