Abstract
South American rivers discharge ∼ 300,000 m3/s from April to June and their plumes infiltrate the eastern Caribbean (12–18N, 57–66W) via currents off Guyana. Variations in this low salinity pool are studied using satellite measurements and coupled reanalysis over the period 2000–2023. Empirical results demonstrate that trade wind-driven currents during April–June draw the river plumes at ∼ 0.1 m/s toward the east Caribbean by July–September. Lag correlations and scatterplots provide new insights. The northward pulsing of currents, during an El Nino to La Nina transition in 2019, swelled the low salinity pool. Consequently, a shallow ∼20 m mixed layer led to a 2C warming of sea temperature and 26 W/m2 upward heat flux. The air–sea interactions supported formation of hurricane Dorian 26–29 August 2019 in the east Caribbean.
