Abstract
Enterococcus faecalis is the third most common cause of native valve infective endocarditis (IE) [1] and the leading cause of IE after transcatheter aortic valvular implantations, which are increasingly common [2]. Enterococcus faecalis IE (EFIE) is associated with high morbidity and mortality, including in-hospital mortality rates of ∼25% and relapse rates ranging 5-10% [3,4]. Current guidelines from the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) [5] and American Heart Association (AHA) [6] recommend penicillin, amoxicillin, or ampicillin plus adjunctive gentamicin or ceftriaxone (ESC: Level I, Class B; AHA: Level IIa, Class B).
