Hydrocarbon Oxidation Catalyzed by Mn-Rich Hydrothermal Fluids: A Case Study of Solid Bitumen in Ordos Basin, Northwest China

Abstract
Summary A dark mineral suspected to be solid bitumen was discovered in the Qingshuihe area of the northeast Ordos Basin. The origin and source of the bitumen were determined through organic petrology and biomarker analysis, accompanied by a thorough geochemical assessment. Results from Soxhlet extraction, SARA analysis, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, Raman spectroscopy, rare Earth element (REE) analysis, and microscanning collectively established that these solid bitumens are, in fact, “pseudobitumen.” Upon comparison with subsurface data, it can be deduced that these trace organic materials have been influenced by a common hydrothermal process. These trace organic components exhibit significant oxidation and encase metallic minerals produced by tectonic activity. Their distribution is limited, and scale is not extensive. Consequently, the exploration outlook for natural gas in the Cambrian system in the northeast Ordos Basin remains contentious and poses challenges. Further evaluation should be based on whether there is fractured bitumen in the Proterozoic and Lower Paleozoic in the basin. In contrast to trace organic matter, greater emphasis should be placed on investigating other solid minerals introduced by hydrothermal processes across the entire tectonic region.
