Abstract
Abstract I argue that the fifteenth-century writer Christine de Pizan, rather than Karl Marx, should be credited with anticipating the distinction he drew between the class-in-itself and the class-for-itself. She does so in her most famous work, The City of Ladies, where she adapts Augustine’s view of what a “city” is to distinguish interests that women objectively share from their recognition of those interests, arguing that women can find solidarity with each other by cultivating the feminized virtues of trust, care, and cooperation.
