Les formes synthétique et analytique du futur en français vernaculaire ne sont pas en train de se remplacer l’une l’autre. Au contraire, elles coexistent et construisent des opérations sémantico-énonciatives distinctes. Cet article propose que la distinction fondamentale entre ces opérations n’est pas temporelle, comme on le croit habituellement, mais plutôt modale. La forme analytique est utilisée pour accroître la force assertive de l’énoncé, et la forme synthétique est utilisée pour réduire cette force assertive. Entre Je vais y aller tout à l’heure et J’irai tout à l’heure, la différence n’est pas dans la proximité ou la non proximité du moment de réalisation, mais plutôt dans le degré de certitude ou d’incertitude de l’énonciateur sur cette réalisation même. Le premier est du type : “Je vais y aller. Promis”. Le second est du type : “J’irai peut-être, si ça me chante”.
