Abstract
In the US, substance use disorder has become a significant public health concern. According to the 2023 US National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 48.5 million Americans aged ≥ 12 years had a substance use disorder in the past year.1 Long-term substance use disorder has been associated with nutrition-related diseases such as malnutrition and impaired gastrointestinal function2–5; cravings and preference for nutrient-poor sweet and salty foods6,7; and food insecurity.8 Given the common brain pathway for craving foods and illicit substances, food cravings, food-related emotion and pleasure, and impulsivity tend to be elevated among substance use recovery (SUR) audiences.
