Abstract
Au printemps 2024 paraît l’ultime numéro de la version canadienne du Reader's Digest qui avait lancé ses deux filiales canadiennes française et anglaise en juillet 1947 et février 1948. Née près de New York en 1922, elle est présente très tôt au Canada et sait tirer profit du conflit mondial pour accroître sa notoriété puis, après-guerre, tenter de se fondre dans le paysage culturel canadien – même s’il faut attendre les années 1970 pour que les deux filiales s'émancipent quelque peu de la tutelle de la maison-mère. Si cette histoire du Reader's Digest est assez souvent évoquée, celle de la douzaine d'autres « digestes » canadiens s'inspirant du mensuel américain est, en revanche, beaucoup moins connue. Ces digestes agissent comme un sismographe de l'histoire canadienne du milieu du 20e siècle. Du format aux condensés, du prix à la qualité du papier, cet article s’efforce aussi de cerner les caractéristiques de ce « genre littéraire » du siècle écoulé pour en proposer une définition viable.
