Abstract

The 1901 deposit of Hudbay Minerals Inc. is one of seven Zn−Cu–Au volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in the Lower Chisel Sequence at Snow Lake. Past research suggests that VMS mineralization in the Chisel Lake area occurs at a conformable stratigraphic boundary between the Lower and Upper Chisel sequences (LU–UC). However, our investigation indicates that mineralization occurs below this contact, in a calc-alkaline volcanic sequence, with the LC–UC contact being a flat-lying, shallow northeast-dipping fault, known as the Chisel–Lalor Thrust Fault (CLTF). The CLTF is found at the Chisel North and Lalor Lake VMS deposits, where there are distinct angular differences between the barren rocks above the fault and the mineralized zones below. Faults like the CLTF are difficult to detect in volcanic domains, but crucial for exploration models as they can disrupt and repeat favourable formations and obscure stratigraphy.
