Abstract
Since 1907, the Hungarian Geographical Society, founded in 1872, has been holding the so-called “wandering” General Assemblies annually in different cities of Hungary, with the ultimate goal of becoming more familiar with and thoroughly exploring the surroundings of the country. At the suggestion of the Toronto Hungarian Cultural Society, 1908 saw Groß-Betschkerek (today Zrenjanin) chosen as the venue for the next year’s event. The wandering assembly took place in early autumn 1909 and lasted three days (September 25–27). Comprehensive preparations and organizational measures were taken for this conference, involving entire bodies of county and city officials. Distinguished people from the city and county were mobilized to ensure a more effective and better reception for the esteemed guests. The three-day program included: a ceremonial reception of the society members at the train station, their accommodation, and an evening social event at the local casino; on the following day, the General Assembly took place, with various presentations from the members, followed by a lunch in honor of the guests, a tour of the city’s sights, an evening lecture about Mexico at the municipal theater, and a soirée at the Torontál district chief Béla Botka’s residence. On the last day, an excursion was organized to the Danube wetlands near Opovo to acquaint Hungary’s most renowned geographical scholars with the local conditions. Although it has remained unexplored in the framework of local historiography to this day, the wandering General Assembly of the Hungarian Geographical Society held in Groß-Betschkerek in 1909 is considered one of the most significant cultural events in the city during the first decade of the 20th century. The conference brought together the leading geographers, meteorologists, and other scientists of Hungary, such as Jenő Cholnoky, Rezső Havass, Ernő Massány, Pál Teleki, Antal Rethly, Amade Schwalm, Rezső Milleker, and others. Although excluded from this prestigious group of prominent names in Hungarian geographical science, local representative Géza Czirbusz managed to leave his mark on the conference. The annual General Assembly of the Hungarian Geographical Society in Groß-Betschkerek was the result of the diligent work and years-long efforts of the Torontál Cultural Society to support, popularize, and expand Hungarian culture and science. At the same time, the society initiated numerous similar endeavors. The aftermath of the conference led to some lectures, as well as the scientific study of the Torontál County within the extensive publication series of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences on Hungarian cities and counties, in which the individual participants of the conference played a significant role.
