Abstract No: 279 Effect of Aerobic Exercise on Cognition and Cardiovascular Risk in Community Dwelling Middle-Aged People with Hypertension

Abstract
Purpose: To find the effect of aerobic exercise on cognition and cardiovascular risk in community-dwelling middle-aged people with hypertension. Relevance: Hypertension is one of the most important modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and other conditions. Research indicates that physical exercise can effectively manage hypertension, reduce cardiovascular disease risk, and improve blood flow to the brain. Participants: 26 people with hypertension (≥ 2 years), with mild to moderate cognitive impairment (MoCA score 10-25) aged between 40-60 years were randomized into an intervention group A or a control group B. Method: Ethics approval was obtained. The experimental study was conducted in community of Ahmedabad. Group A performed home-based walking at 11-13 RPE (rate of perceived exertion according to Borg scale) for 150 minutes/week with warm-up and cool-down, five times a week for 6 weeks. Group B continued their usual routine. Outcome used for cognition was the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Waist circumference (WC) for cardiovascular risk. Analysis: Data analysis was performed using SPSSv.20. Mann-Whitney U test was used for between-group analyses in cognition. Independent t-test for between-group analyses in WC. Level of Significance was 5%. Results: For both MoCA and WC, between-group analyses shows significant difference (U =49.000,p=0.065), (U=30.000,p=0.004) respectively. Conclusion: Six weeks of aerobic training in middle aged people with hypertension reduces cardiovascular risks. Implication: Aerobic exercise like walking is recommended for individuals with hypertension as it is a feasible, accessible, low-risk low-cost activity and easily performed at home or outdoors. Sedentary individuals may further benefit from gradually increasing the intensity of their workouts. Thus, lifestyle modifications can be advocated for the prevention, treatment, and control of HTN, with exercise being an integral component.
