Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Ocean acidification (OA) is increasingly affecting marine ecosystems, including those in the deep sea. Desmophyllum pertusum is an essential habitat-forming coral in the deep sea, where it builds extensive reefs that sustain high biodiversity. Although several studies have focused on the impacts of OA on adult stages in D. pertusum, impacts on early life processes in this species are still unknown. In this study, we determined the effects of OA on the embryonic survival, embryonic development, and larval swimming behavior of D. pertusum. We reared live embryos under two pCO2–pH treatments, representing present conditions, and conditions projected under the IPCC RCP8.5 scenario for 2100. Although embryonic development and larval swimming behavior were not affected, we detected a statistically significant, negative effect of OA on larval survival, which emerged towards the end of our experiment. Our results provide the first insights into the impacts of a climate change stressor on early life stages of a cold-water coral.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
