En dépit de leur rôle important dans l’action sociale et humanitaire en Méditerranée, Mary Spears et Marguerite Catroux ont laissé une image ambiguë dans les mémoires de la France libre. En croisant les archives françaises et britanniques, cet article dresse un premier bilan des fonctions qu’elles remplissent sur un territoire qui fut essentiel dans la géopolitique de la France libre. à travers ce portrait croisé, l’auteur se propose de réfléchir à la manière dont fut pensée et « incarnée » l’action humanitaire dans la France libre et d’examiner les rapports sociaux tissés au quotidien autour des activités médicales.
