Si entre juin 1940 et novembre 1942, le Maroc est contrôlé par Vichy, de Gaulle fonde un réseau clandestin dans l’Empire chérifien qui lui permet de prendre le contrôle du pays avec l’arrivée à la résidence générale de Gabriel Puaux en juin 1943. Ce dernier parvient à museler les anciens vichystes et les nationalistes marocains, alliés au sultan, au prix d’une répression et de promesses de réformes qui sauvent momentanément le régime du protectorat.
